Cloudflare Sandbox SDK 1.0 Gives Every Agent Its Own Sandbox

Isolated, persistent compute for each agent is now a standard building block, not infrastructure you build yourself. Cloudflare Sandbox SDK 1.0 lets each agent own its sandbox through a Durable Object, and Upstash shipped the same one sandbox per agent pattern. If you run agents in parallel, stop rolling your own isolation.
What Changed
- Before: giving each agent its own isolated, stateful machine meant building container orchestration, cleanup, and state handling yourself.
- Now: Sandbox SDK 1.0 ties one sandbox to one Durable Object you own, so an agent gets its own image, size, network policy, and lifetime by default.
- The sandbox persists with the agent: snapshots (public beta) save a workspace and restart or clone it later, so work survives between turns.
- Credentials stay outside: outbound requests route through your Worker, so an agent can act without holding secrets inside its sandbox.
- This is not a one-vendor bet. Upstash released Upstash Box with the explicit pitch that a software factory needs one sandbox per agent, with snapshot fan-out and network policies.
Who Should Care
- Teams running several coding or research agents in parallel that today share one machine or a hand-built container pool.
- Builders on Cloudflare Workers who want per-agent isolation and state without operating their own orchestration.
- Platform teams about to build in-house agent sandboxing, who can now buy it as a primitive instead.
Who Should Not Care
- Solo developers running one agent at a time on a laptop; a local container already does the job.
- Teams whose agents only call APIs and never execute code or touch a filesystem.
- Shops with on-prem or data residency rules that forbid managed cloud execution.
The Verdict
A sandbox for every agent is now a product, not a project. Cloudflare Sandbox SDK 1.0 and Upstash Box both ship isolated, persistent compute per agent, which means the hard part of parallel agents is no longer infrastructure. If you are about to build this yourself, stop and prototype one agent on a managed sandbox first. Treat snapshots as beta until they reach GA.
